GENERAL

Hello, my name is Mark and I wish to explain how and why this came about. I am 55 years old and have been fishing since I was 10 years old. I started fishing in the Thames around Twickenham and Richmond with my dad way back thenand over the years I have developed an interest in all forms of angling including sea fishing. Back in 2000 I found myself with a lot of time on my hands and decided to do a lot more fishing and to make it interesting I started to collect data every time I went fishing. I noted every fish caught and the conditions it was caught under including month, wind direction, wind speed, weather, air and water temperatures, barometer readings, water colour and moon phase. By 2005 I had collected a lot of data and I decided to process this through a computer. I was looking for trends and to see how different species of coarse fish reacted to different conditions.

It was at this point that I had the idea of using this data to try and predict which species would be feeding when I went fishing. So, I set to work on a program through the winter of 2005-2006 and developed what came to be known as the Coarse Fishing Reckoner. By looking at how active a species was in relation to a particular condition and sets of conditions, I slowly developed this into a program; the Coarse Fishing Reckoner. When I started field testing this through the summer I was surprised and excited to find how well this worked and the program was predicting the fish I was catching 80% of the time. I sent a copy of it on a disc to the Angling Times and Greg Whitehead, one of thier chief journalists, rang me and thought it was "a great piece of kit and a great idea". Consequently, he wrote a lovely article titled "A Perfect Days Fishing". This was published on pages 1 and 2 of the Angling Times in July 2006 and I received a huge amount of interest from anglers all around the country. I sold copies of the Coarse Fishing Reckoner and answered many questions from thier readers. All this was a long time ago and I have spent a lot of time developing and improving the program since then.

This website was a logical step forward to try to bring the concept to more anglers so they would have an opportunity to try it out and to share some of the results of my research I had done of the data. When I started using the Reckoner I caught a lot more fish; the difference being that I was not fishing blind and I was picking venues, swims and methods that were appropriate to the conditions and species that were feeding. This is a new concept in coarse fishing but, if it works for me then it can work for you. That's why I have given you the chance to try it out for yourself. I am certain you will catch more fish with the help of the information you get from the program as I have done. If you go fishing with the knowledge of which species are most likely to be active you can prepare so much better and select your venue, swim, bait and tackle accordingly. This information is especially helpful for fishing matches.

I have also produced 8 documents relating to tench, carp, bream, roach, chub, big roach, crucian carp and rudd. These documents contain the results in graph form of my research in relation to each species.
