MONTHLY NOTES FOR AUGUST
It will not be much of a surprise to you that August is usually our hottest month. It is because of this that many species become lethargic during this month as the water temperature rises and there is less oxygen in the water. Mind you it has been very warm the last 10 days of July. You will often see some species of fish swimming around near the surface during hot weather. This is because there is more oxygen near the surface as it is being diffused from the air above. These fish will often not be interested in feeding. However, there is one species that seems to thrive in these conditions and that is bream. I believe these fish have evolved to tolerate the low oxygen levels so they can exploit this. If other species are not feeding then this must create an abundance of food that nature would not leave unexploited.
The graph below shows that bream are the top species for August by a long way. So, if the weather becomes very hot bream will be your best option. The second graph shows the result for air temperatures for bream... and as you can see the results bear this out. Alternatives to bream and second and third in the table are roach and chub respectively. Unfortunately August is not a good month for carp although you will often see them swimming about near the surface and night time fishing will produce better results when the temperatures are cooler. As always a lot depends on the conditions overall and August is not always hot..infact last year was very cool for most of the month.
If you like this information but, would like to see more detail you can purchase a complete rundown for each species including bream. The results are given in a graph form and include 8 graphs showing the results for :- month, wind direction, wind speed, weather, air temperature, water temperature, barometric pressure, water colour and moon phase. They also contain a quick glance table that shows the top two ranges for each condition. These can help you make a quick estimation of how good the conditions are for a particular species when you go fishing. Check the Sales - Species Documents Page
